BeforeCrypt describes that MAKOP Ransomware first appeared in 2020 as an offshoot of the PHOBOS variant, and that it has infected a number of computers since then.

Background

According to BeforeCrypt, MAKOP Ransomware emerged in 2020 as a spinoff of the PHOBOS variant and has compromised numerous machines since. Encrypted files typically carry the “.makop” extension, and victims may also find their desktop wallpaper replaced. The ransomware relies on RSA encryption, and no free decryption tools are known to recover files it has locked.
